What Does The District Clerk Do?
The District Clerk is an elected official and department head for the entire county of Bastrop. The District clerk appoints a Chief Deputy who works closely to assist the District clerk. The District Clerk has the honor of deputizing deputy clerks who act as an extension to process, file and record case documents, The District Clerk's office is responsible for maintaining all court records for the district courts in Bastrop County. This includes filing and preserving documents, managing exhibits, and providing access to records for legal professionals and the public. Another task performed by the District Clerk is maintaining the jury selections for all jury trials of Bastrop, not only the District Court cases but also the County Court at Law and the Justice of the Peace courts for all precincts. The Clerk's office is also tasked with maintaining the court's registry, any funds or bonds to be held in conjunction with civil suits are held by the Bastrop District Clerk.
The Bastrop County District Clerk's office is also a United States Passport Acceptance facility, the civil clerks are certified as Acceptance Agents who accept and process applications for residents to obtain their US passports.
